Police in Oakham have been giving out tips and advice at a cycle safety event.

Scores of cycling enthusiasts turned out for the event which was held at Oakham Cycle Centre in Melton Road.

As well as road safety and bike security advice, police also gave out free reflective wrist bands, and the store put special offers on items such as bike lights and immobilise security tags.

Bikes were also postcoded. This acts as a deterrent to thieves and helps the police return the bike to its owner if stolen.

PCSO Nicole Welsh, who organised the event, said: “A number of cycling enthusiasts visited the store and received advice on cycle security and safety. The free fluorescent armbands and rucksacks proved a big success.

“We will be organising another similar event in the near future when the weather is a bit warmer for cycling.”

“Officers in Rutland are often out and about on their police bikes and we want to encourage others to cycle too but we also want to make sure they are safe on the county’s roads and that they keep their bikes secure to avoid them being stolen.”
