PRISONERS serving life at HMP Ashwell have raised £3,000 for a home which looks after people with learning disabilities.

The inmates raised the money for Willowbrook Residential Home in Willow Crescent, Oakham over the past three years during organised days when the lifers’ families come to visit.

Lifer manager Gaynor Harnder organises the events which include a raffle with prizes donated by the prison staff.

The days are organised so lifers can spend time with their families and sometimes include a barbecue.

Manager of Willowbrook Residential Home Alison Harris said the money would be spent on building a sensory room in the style of a Scandinavian cabin for the residents and equipment. The room helps residents with relaxation and communication skills.
