Oakham man John Clarke, 79, admits causing fatal crash while under influence of alcohol

A 79-year-old driver has admitted being under
the influence of
alcohol when he caused a crash in which two women died.

John Clarke, of Warn Crescent, Oakham, appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Friday
to plead guilty to two
counts of causing death
by careless driving when over the prescribed alcohol limit.

The charges relate to a crash that happened
on the A6003 outside Oakham at about 11am on March 18, 2010.

Clarke’s Ford Galaxy collided with a Ford
Focus being driven by Jacqueline Hibbens, 65, of Oakham, who died at the scene.

Jeanne Slyfield, a passenger in the Focus,
died later in the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The hearing was adjourned until March 27 so a pre-sentence report can be prepared.

Clarke, who was hurt in the collision, has been released on bail.
