A group that goes into a prison and offers a range of rehabilitation and education services to inmates is looking for more volunteers.

The Prison Fellowship was set up in England and Wales in 1979 to try and restore the lives of prisoners and their families.

The Stamford branch of the fellowship has been running for about 10 years and has a dedicated core of 18 volunteers who regularly visit the inmates at HMP Stocken, in Stretton.

The members run a number of initiatives to help educate prisoners and encourage them to understand the impact of their crimes.

One of the most important of these is the Sycamore Tree Programme, a six week victim awareness course.

Branch leader Marjorie Needham said: “A lot of prisoners don’t see that they have victims. And they don’t think about their own families.

“We once had a man who said he didn’t have victims because he robbed cash machines.

“But he hadn’t thought about the people he had taken the money from.”

“We have victims come in and talk to the men. That is a great eye opener. Quite often you see grown men in tears.”

The branch accepts volunteers from across the Mercury area. A meeting for those who want to find out more will be held at Trinity Methodist Church in Barn Hill, Stamford from 2.30pm to 4.30pm tomorrow (Saturday). Call Marjorie on 07767 034125 for more.
