OPPORTUNISTIC thieves stole a 91-year-old woman’s handbag while she was out shopping.
Kathleen Calver’s bag was taken from her shopping trolley between 11.30am and midday today (Friday) in High Street, Stamford.
The thieves made off with the bag, which contained £60 cash and a number of sentimental items, while Mrs Calver had her back turned.
She didn’t see the theft but has appealed to the Mercury for help catching those responsible.
Mrs Calver, from Ketton, said: “It was only £60 but it could have been more and some things can’t be replaced.”
PC Debbie Bowen urged shoppers to keep an eye on their belongings. She said: “This has happened before in Stamford town centre. If you are worried about your belongings you can come to the police station to pick up a bell or a chain, or just for some advice.”
If you saw the thief who took Mrs Calver’s handbag or have any information on the theft, call police on 101 quoting incident number 163 of June 22.
