Police have warned residents to be vigilant after an attempted distraction burglary.

Two men claiming to be from the water board visited an elderly couple in Seaton at about 4.30pm on Friday last week. The couple did not let them in. Severn Trent confirmed they had no one working in the area.

The men may have been driving a black Ford Focus ST.

Police have issued some tips to help people falling victim to distraction burglars.

○ Keep your front and back doors locked.

○ Use a door chain until you are certain the caller is genuine.

○ Talk to callers through the door, or an open window. Don’t let unknown callers into your home. No utility company will say they are from the “water board”.

○ Ask the caller for an identification card, ask them to post it through the letterbox, and check them out.

○ Ring the company they say they are from to confirm their identity.

○ Alternatively ask them to write to you and make an appointment and ask a neighbour or family member to be there when they arrive.
