SHOPPERS are being warned to be on their guard after two purses have been stolen.
Police say a gang of women have been stealing purses in Stamford and Bourne.
A Stamford woman had a purse stolen from her handbag while shopping in the High Street at around 2pm yesterday. Her bank card was then used to withdraw £700.
It is believed three women were involved in the theft.
One woman is described as being around 30-years-old and plump with dark hair in a bun. She was wearing dark glasses, a white Nike shirt and three-quarter-length trousers.
Another suspect was aged between 18 and 25-years-old and wearing a bright pink T-shirt and back jeans. She was carrying a brown handbag.
The third suspect was between 18 and 25-years-old and wearing a scarf. She was wearing a white long-sleeved top and blue jeans.
Earlier in the afternoon a similar incident took place in Bourne.
A 73-year-old woman was shopping in the Burghley Centre, when she was approached by a woman who spoke to her.
While distracted it is believed another woman stole a purse containing around £290 from her handbag. It is thought the same gang is responsible for both crimes.
A police spokesman said: “Shoppers are being advised to be on the lookout of these women, to make sure their handbags are closed at all times and ideally, to wear them over their fronts so they are less accessible. Purse chains are available from local beat teams via police stations in the towns, or by calling the non-emergency number below.”
