Stamford Arts Centre has been named one of the seven most welcoming theatres in the UK.

The venue in St Mary’s Street received enough votes from the public to make it into the My Theatre Matters! Most Welcoming Theatre Award, run by Classic FM.

The arts centre was one of 225 theatres in the competition and has reached the final seven alongside such prestigious venues as the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick and the St James Theatre in London.

The winner will now be announced at the annual UK Theatre Awards ceremony in London’s Guildhall on Sunday, October 20.

Marketing and box office manager Jo Dobbs said: “We are absolutely delighted and extremely excited.

“We have been asking for people to vote for us on social media and e-mailing all out customers.

“We do have a really loyal following and we want to thank them all for voting for us.

“We feel proud that people wanted to vote for us and that they feel we are a welcoming theatre.”

The overall winner will be decided by the number of public votes it received divided by the number of seats it has.

The full shortlist comprises Stamford Arts Centre, the Bike Shed in Exeter, the Watermill in Newbury, the Mill at Sonning, Wilton’s Music Hall in London, the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick and the St James Theatre in London.
