A married couple who have served as doctors in Castle Bytham for more than 30 years have hung up their stethoscopes for good.
Drs George, 62, and Margaret Campbell, 62, have been partners in Glenside Country Practice, Castle Bytham for more than 30 years.
The couple, who married in 1973 while training at Edinburgh University, took over the practice from Dr Harris, who ran the surgery out of his own house.
Over the last 30 years Drs Campbell have lived and enjoyed working in Castle Bytham, also serving patients in Corby Glen and Rippingale.
On March 31 the couple retired from the surgery.
Dr George Campbell said: “We have both loved our time living and working in this rural community where we feel we have really been able to treat our patients within the context of their work and family lives.
“We have seen the practice develop from written records to integrated medical computing which is great as long as the power stays on - from no staff to a dedicated primary health care team.
“We are now ready to move on to the next stage in our lives with equal enthusiasm - with time to continue and to expand our many interests. These include our grandchildren, country sports, gun dogs, foreign travel, golf, skiing and much more.”
The couple have two sons, Niall, 35, a consultant in emergency medicine at Dumfries Royal Infirmary, who is married to Claire a GP with two children; and Stuart, 33, a veterinarian working near Nottingham.
On their final day a special leaving party was organised by Glenside Surgery at Castle Bytham Village Hall. The invitation was extended to all patients and residents of Castle Bytham and the neighbouring villages.
It was well attended and old friends and patients got an opportunity to express their wishes to the leaving couple.
The Glenside Surgery will now be run by Dr Ritabrata Ray who joined the practice in April 2010.
