The Duchess of Gloucester has launched an appeal to raise £6m for a new building at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.
The appeal was launched on Wednesday with the planting of a ceremonial bush by the duchess.
During her visit, the duchess visited palliative care wards and met school children and dignitaries.
In the new building every patient will have a private room and the duchess said patients reaching the end of their lives deserved comfort and support.
A full report on the launch will be in next week’s Mercury.
