Youngsters at Oakham School were given a special lesson in news reporting during a visit from a former pupil.

Channel 4 News editor Ben de Pear returned to his old school to give some wise words of advice about journalism and the media as the main speaker at the school’s annual Social Science Guest Night.

The Year 13 pupils, who study economics, business and politics, had the opportunity to listen to Ben’s experience of editing the news for Channel 4.

As well as speaking fondly about his time at Oakham School, he outlined his journey into journalism and his rise to be editor of the programme.

The pupils found his description of investigative journalism, along with extracts from a report that the programme had run on Syria, to be both interesting and challenging.

Ben also opened a debate with pupils about where they got their news from, and outlined the impact of new forms of media on traditional TV news.

Head of business, Sophia Clarke, said: “It really was an experience that our sixthformers will savour for sometime.”
