A TEACHER hopes to build on the success of her predecessor when she takes over as head.

Emma Smith, 38, will take the reins at Stamford Junior School in September.

Mrs Smith, who has taught Year 6 children at the school for the last six years, will replace current headteacher Libby Craig who is retiring in June after 15 years in charge.

“I am very excited to be taking over, I am thrilled,” said Mrs Smith. “It is a real privilege and I am looking forward to taking on the post.”

The school received an outstanding Ofsted inspection report before Christmas and Mrs Smith hopes to build Miss Craig’s work.

She added: “Libby has been an outstanding headteacher and I have been very fortunate to have had the time working with her that I have.

“There is always time for fresh approaches. I shall aim to build on her excellence.”

Mrs Smith began her teaching career in White City, London and was a deputy head in Kingston upon Thames before coming to Stamford.

She is looking forward to the latest chapter of her career.

She said: “I want to develop the school. It is a very progressive school and we are always reviewing and monitoring.

“I will be looking to strengthen and enrich the curriculum. It is a constant cycle of development.

“Personal learning is close to my heart. We also have a focus on emotional literacy and intelligent learning.”

Mrs Smith has received plenty of support from pupils and parents since the news of her appointment was announced.

She said: “The pupils have been fantastic.

“I have had some lovely messages from parents. My class were thrilled and asked if they were allowed to vote for me. They are all lovely characters.”

The school is holding an open day for its Earlybird Nursery on Tuesday, February 21 at 10am.

Parents are invited to see what goes on in the nursery and reception classes.
