Construction students at New College Stamford impressed in a competition.

The students took part in the regional heats of SkillBuild – a national competition which tests students on their building trade skills - at Vision West Nottingham College in Mansfield, Notts. The highest scoring competitors are given the opportunity to compete at the three day SkillBuild UK Final, which will take place later this year.

John Austin, 20, a carpentry trainee at New College Stamford, took first place in the carpentry and joinery new entrant category.

John said: “I’m absolutely delighted, it’s great to have won this special award.

“The competition was tough, but it’s been worth all the hard work and preparation.”

Director of construction at the college Gary McPartland said he hoped John’s success would inspire other students.
