New sixthform college in Rutland opened by baroness

A college in Rutland is celebrating after the doors to its new £5.5m centre were officially opened by a member of the House of Lords.
Rutland County College’s new facility in Barleythorpe was opened by Baroness Berridge of the Vale of Catmose at the end of last week.
The building was previously a conference centre and is owned by Rutland County Council.
The centre has been warmly received by students and staff since they moved in at the beginning of September.
The light and airy corridors, combined with attractive classrooms, create a good atmosphere for learning.
All the rooms in the building have been named after Rutland villages.
Combined with the attractive woodland setting, this creates a small, friendly and personalised ambience.
On opening the centre, the Baroness, who was a former student of The Rutland College, said: “It is a great privilege to return to my former sixthform college and open this wonderful new building.”
She was then presented with a bouquet by student Charlotte Smith.
In her speech college principal Victoria Crosher gave a brief history of the school starting from when it was originally the Rutland High School for Girls in 1965.
She outlined the varied and exciting curriculum and reminded those attending of their commitment to provide as wide an offer as possible, so that no Rutland learners had to travel an hour to access high quality education.
She also thanked Rutland County Council for its partnership and singled out the contribution of Coun Terry King whose significant work had helped complete the project.
The event was attended by members and officers of the council and friends of the college, including the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard and the former High Sheriff of Rutland Peter Lawson.
Staff and students were also in attendance at the opening.
The college moved out of its old site in Barleythorpe Road, Oakham, in August.
Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has submitted a planning application to move on to the site.
