New College Stamford students launch record label and radio station
STUDENTS are launching a record label and a radio station.
New College Stamford has teamed up with the Voodoo Lounge at Mama Liz’s in North Street, Stamford to allow music students to get an insight into the workings of gig promotion.
In 2011 the students staged a sell out music event featuring performances from some of the college’s talented bands and the partnership’s next venture will be to launch a music label.
Voodoo Lounge owner Michael Houlihan said: “The ethos of The Voodoo Lounge is to support talented young local musicians and I am sure the students will benefit greatly from the knowledge gained in both organising and performing in these events.
“A recent meeting with Ofsted at the college also gained a very positive response and we have found the students to be organised and eager to make it succeed as well, which is brilliant.’’
The college’s music technology course coordinator, Sam Chapman, is no stranger to the music industry. He was a member of TV boy band North & South and scored four UK Top 40 hits in the 1990s including the number 7 debut single “I’m a man not a boy”.
Mr Chapman said: “We are delighted to be working with an established music venue such as Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge and the students really enjoy contributing to community events.
“The venue has been extremely supportive of our vision to offer students industry experience and we look forward to further successful events.”
The college has received a record number of applications for the 2012 music performance and music technology courses, which teach students the skills needed to record and produce their own music.
Students will launch their new record label at the Voodoo Lounge on the evening of Thursday, April 19 and have invited people to go along and find out more.
Once the label is set up students will be able to release their own music through iTunes, HMV and other online retailers.
The college’s new radio station will also be launched at the event and will further develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for working in the broadcast industries.
College principal Andrew Patience said: “It’s vital that we keep at the forefront of new technologies and business practices to ensure that our students are equipped with latest skills and techniques to progress in their chosen career. The Voodoo Lounge partnership is another great example of this.”
