A teenager with a head for numbers has been ranked as one of the country’s top young mathematicians.

Oakham School pupil Haolin Hou took part in the UK Maths Trust’s intermediate maths olympiad and came in the top 50 for his age group.

The 14-year-old, pictured above on the right, was invited to take part in the two-hour event after excelling in an individual maths challenge.

Fellow pupil Gregory Sale, 15, also pictured above, received a merit certificate for his efforts.

School head of maths Camilla Darwin said: “The maths in these competitions is extremely rigorous and we’re delighted that our pupils did so well.”
