Stamford Queen Eleanor School pupils take part in language challenge

TEENAGERS at Stamford Queen Eleanor School put their language skills to the test in a challenge to market Stilton cheese to the French.
Year 9 pupils took part in the challenge, run by Department of Education-sponsored Business Language Champions, which encourage young people to study foreign languages. Working in teams the children created a trade stand that would attract foreign buyers and produced a leaflet in both French and English.
Languages graduate Karen Illsley spoke to the pupils about the many careers options available to those with a language qualification.
Jessica Thomas, head of modern foreign languages at the school, said: “The idea behind the day was to increase enthusiasm for languages and to encourage as many of our students as possible to choose to study at least one language at GCSE in order to increase their employability in today’s global economy.”
Headteacher Wendy Hamilton said: “This kind of event fits perfectly with the central role that languages now play in our curriculum, with French and Italian available along with Russian as an after school activity.”
