FIVE young chess masters have been competing in a county-wide tournament.

Malcolm Sargent Primary School pupils Luke Tooth, 10, Alexandra Nicholson, nine, Georgina Nicholson, six, Nicholas Lees, six, and Evan Candish, seven, took part in the Lincolnshire Megafinal of the Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge earlier this month.

Luke, Georgina and Nicholas qualified for the England North semi-final, which will take place in Derby in July.

Alexandra narrowly missed qualification from her competitive age group and Evan scored three draws to achieve a respectable result.

The children are all members of the school’s Knights Chess Club. Staff and pupils wished the three qualifiers success in the next round of the competition.
