The Stamford Endowed Schools sixthform bursary scheme to continue
A SIXTHFORM bursary scheme will continue, despite the loss of council funding.
The Stamford Endowed Schools has offered a small number of subsidised sixthform places to pupils of Stamford Queen Eleanor School for almost a decade.
For the past two years the scheme has been part-funded by Lincolnshire County Council. This year the council dropped its funding but the Endowed Schools still hope to offer the same level of bursary support.
Principal Stephen Roberts said: “The Stamford Endowed Schools have increased the level of bursary provision so that students from Stamford Queen Eleanor can continue to attend our sixthform now that funding is no longer provided by Lincolnshire County Council.
“We remain committed to giving children in Stamford the option to attend the place of education best suited to them and hope they will benefit from this opportunity to continue their education with us.
“Our sixthform has an impressive record of academic success and last year enabled 75 per cent of students to gain their first choice of university.”
Each bursary place is decided on a case-by-case basis, with any Queen Eleanor pupil who gets five or more B grades in their GCSE exams able to apply. Typically two or three pupils are admitted each year.
The bursary scheme will run alongside the new Stamford Sixth Form Centre which was announced last month. The centre has been set up by Queen Eleanor and New College Stamford and will pool the resources and teaching expertise of both institutions.
Queen Eleanor headteacher Wendy Hamilton is pleased the bursary scheme is continuing.
She said: “The scheme was always put in place to meet the needs of a small number of our students.
“It has been very successful and the first set of students finish this year, while our current Year 11s are applying. The hope is that the scheme will continue to support them.
“The three institutions want to continue to work together, but New College Stamford and ourselves understand that we are the state providers and there is no point in us working in competition. It is better to build on what is already there.”
