If you only do one thing this week...

....learn how to throw together a culinary delight when the cupboard is almost bare.

You know the feeling: it's getting towards the end of the month, pay day is still a week away and there's hardly anything left to eat in the house.

Well, starve no longer, as Cooking by Numbers (www.cookingbynumbers.com) is here to help you cook up a veritable feast from the scant morsels of food that inhabit your fridge and cupboards.

All you have to do is tick off the ingredients you have from a list of 50 common items and, quick as a flash, it'll suggest a load of tasty recipes based on what you've got. It really couldn't be much simpler and is a great way of using up leftovers and cans of food approaching their use by date.

A recent Cabinet Office report concluded that the average British family throws away 420 worth of food each year.

By using the Cooking by Numbers website you can mix and match the most unlikely of foods and still come up with some mouth-watering recipes. At the end of the month I usually throw any leftover ingredients into one gigantic stew, but I'll certainly be trying out some of the menu suggestions on offer. It's like Google for food, but a whole lot tastier.
