Row over trees being cut down on Stamford’s Recreation Ground
TEMPERS flared today as contractors moved in to cut down a century-old tree in Stamford.
Stamford Town Council brought in tree surgeons to clear a number of trees from the Recreation Ground yesterday and today.
But the Friends of the Recreation Ground were angry they had not been consulted.
Three members of the Friends were at the Rec today (Friday) pleading with councillors Bob Sandall and David Nalson to delay the work so further discussion could take place.
Treasurer Anna Wotherspoon accused the council of ignoring the Friends’ advice.
Mrs Wotherspoon said: “They are taking down too many trees. It is devastating.
“It will take 50 to 100 years to replace what has been taken out in two days.”
The debate centred around a particular tree next to the old ladies’ toilets which are currently used by the Stamford Rock Tennis Club. The tree is thought to be over 100 years old.
Coun Bob Sandall, the council’s finance committee chairman, said the tree’s roots were causing damage to the neighbouring building’s drains.
He said: “We have taken advice from tree specialists at South Kesteven District Council.
“If we don’t take the tree out now it will do more damage.”
Contractors Rutland Tree Care were due to cut down the tree today but decided instead to carry out other work and come back on Monday.
Trees by the men’s toilets were removed yesterday to improve visibility and allow for the landscaping of the area for the new toilets, which the Friends have raised money for.
