OAKHAM lit up with excitement as the Olympic torch passed through this afternoon (Tuesday).
Thousands of people from schools and businesses joined residents to line the streets from Barleythorpe Road to Stamford Road to watch four runners make their way through the town.
Second to run was Beth Harris from Edith Weston who was nominated through her job at Vodafone.
Her husband James is in the 16th Regiment Royal Artillery based at St George’s Barracks in North Luffenham and is going to Afghanistan for six months in September.
Beth said: “I am so excited to be here and I can’t believe this is actually happening.
“James is so proud of me and I’m glad he’s here to see it.”
As the torch went through the crowds went wild.
Joy Everitt of Trent Road, Oakham said: “I have never seen Oakham so inspired by anything.”
The torch then moved on to Rutland Water.
