Fire crews leave Bourne scrapyard blaze

Firefighters have left BW Riddle scrapyard in Bourne, following a blaze yesterday (Sunday).

Nearly 300 tonnes of scrap caught fire at about 10.45am and five fire crews were called to the site in South Fen Road.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around and firefighters had to make regular trips from the scene to top up their engines with water.

But crews have now left the site and staff at the recyling plant are now monitoring the situation. The cause is not yet known.

In September, more than 800 tonnes of scrap metal and plastic went up in flames, sparked by friction from an unknown item on a conveyor belt. It carried on smoking for more than three weeks.
