A CENTENARIAN celebrated his milestone birthday with more than 70 friends and family members on Saturday.

Tommy Suthern, of Withers Close, Oakham, was presented with a card from The Queen by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard and was joined in his celebration by High Sheriff of Rutland Peter Lawson and Oakham mayor Joyce Lucas.

His son Glyn said: “He knew there was something taking place but he didn’t know how many people would be there.

“We had photos of his life and people came up and shared stories about him.

“It went very well.”

The party took place at Oakham Methodist Church and family members old and young made it to the event.

Glyn played the piano and a friend of his played the violin.

Glyn added: “I would like to thank all those who helped to organise it.

“Thank you to the Lord Lieutenant and the High Sheriff who came along and to all those who supported my father.”

Instead of presents, Tommy asked for donations for the mayor’s charity The Royal British Legion and raised about £150.
