A gala concert in aid of the NSPCC which was attended by a host of celebrities proved a huge success.
All Saints Church in Oakham was packed for the concert on Monday, with 400 tickets sold.
During the service, guests were greeted with a glass of mulled wine and enjoyed Christmas tales read by names such as Lars Tharp, Nigel Colborn, Rosemary Conley and Peter Wheeler.
It is not yet known how much the concert, which was held in aid of the Rutland branch of the NSPCC, has raised but last year’s total was an amazing £17,000.
The collection alone on Monday night raised £1,750, a bigger sum than even before.
Margaret Wheeler, one of the organisers, was delighted with how it went.
“‘Christmas begins here’ was the comment repeatedly heard among the fortunate audience at this sell-out event,” she said.
She thanked the “vivacious” host Caroline Aston” who gave a moving speech resulting in such a magnificent collection.
