WOMAN and girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are being urged to sign up for Race for Life in Stamford.

The annual event takes place at the grounds of Burghley House in Stamford on Sunday, May 13.

Race for Life, which takes place at venues across the UK, raises funds for Cancer Research UK. People can choose from either a 5km route or a 10km route, which they can walk, jog or run.

Last year, 3,531 women took part in Stamford and raised £202,478. This year, organisers are hoping that an extra 100 women will take part in the 5km event and 50 more will run the 10km route, bringing the total number of runners to 3,650.

The 5km route and 10km route will start at the same time with the long-distance runners taking in more of Burghley Park’s extensive grounds before rejoining the route.

Cancer Research UK’s east events manager Gemma Turpin said it is hoped this year’s event will raise even more money than last year.

She said: “Come on ladies – please enter Race for Life in Stamford today.

“It’s all of us versus cancer and we need you to join the fight as soon as possible.”

Race for Life is non-competitive and most women are able to walk 5km in an hour. Everyone is welcome, including individuals and groups.

Gemma said: “We know many women want to take part but are worried they won’t be able to complete the course.

“We want to reassure them that Race for Life is not about being fast or fit. Instead, it’s a celebration of sisterhood and hope.

“Most women are able to walk 5km in an hour while chatting and having fun.

“The really startling fact is that in the same period of time, around three people in the East of England will be diagnosed with cancer.”

Gemma urged everyone to enter with their friends or family.

She said: “We are very grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life in Stamford last year and in the past. Thanks to them Cancer Research UK has been able to fund much-needed research.

“But the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need them to return to the fight in 2012 and bring new recruits with them.”

As well as Stamford event, Race for Life will also be held at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough on Tuesday, July 10, at 7.30pm.

To take part visit www.raceforlife.org or phone 0871 641 1111. The registration fee is £14.99 for adults and £10 for girls aged under 16.
