South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes is waiting to see whether he will be given a job in new Prime Minister Theresa May’s government.

But having backed Michael Gove for the Conservative Party leadership and keys to Number 10 Downing Street, Mr Hayes did congratulate Mrs May “in person” on succeeding David Cameron as Prime Minister.

Mr Hayes said: “Events moved so rapidly that people wouldn’t have anticipated what has occurred.

“I would have supported Boris Johnson but he withdrew.

“Then I supported Michael Gove because of a longstanding and deep-rooted relationship I’ve had with him.

“But Theresa May is the new leader and I’ve congratulated her in person, having worked with her closely at the Home Office on security matters for the last 14 months.

“So I know her well, but to say more at this stage would be completely unwise.”
