A new exercise bike bought with public donations is helping improve patients’ health at Peterborough City Hospital’s Critical Care Unit.
The exercise bikes are used by Physiotherapists to increase patients’ physical strength which helps them come off ventilation.
Senior physiotherapist Cat Badham said: “Therapy starts as soon as the patient is clinically stable. This can involve activities from bed exercises to mobilising on a portable ventilator, including short trips outside for fresh air.”
The donations have also funded aids such as hand weights and hand dynometer to assess grip strength that speeds rehabilitation.
Cat said: “Early feedback has been very positive. Critical illness can affect people physically and cognitively and early rehabilitation can help combat this.”
