Finance review puts Stamford Hospital redevelopment plan on hold
Stamford Hospital’s development plan has been put on hold while a major review of finances is carried out.
A business plan for the hospital was due to be presented to Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Trust board members at a meeting on Tuesday.
But the presentation has been put back while an independent review is carried out into the trust as a whole.
Plans to turn Stamford Hospital into a health campus with a variety of services provided by the NHS and a not-for-profit organisation were outlined in June.
Since then a contingency planning team has been appointed by foundation trust watchdog Monitor to investigate the trust, which is facing a £54m deficit at Peterborough City Hospital.
The review is expected to last until June and board members have decided not to comment on the business plan for Stamford Hospital until the watchdog results have been published.
The plan is therefore unlikely to come before the board until the end of summer.
The trust’s interim chief executive Peter Reading said: “It is inappropriate to take the business case any further while the contingency planning team is looking at options across the wider health economy.
“The business case, or indeed any strategic development, would need reviewing in line with their recommendations.
“In the meantime, we will continue with business as usual at Stamford Hospital.”
The trust had been considering three options for the development of the hospital. It has said its preferred option is to sell some of the site to a not-for-profit partner but it has also had to look into the possibility of doing the minimum required to keep the hospital running or closing the hospital completely.
Many of the changes suggested by the trust have already started, including turning the minor injuries unit into a nurse-led facility and improving the John Van Geest ward.
Mr Reading has been invited to speak about Stamford Hospital at the next Stamford Town Council meeting, which takes place at the town hall in St Mary’s Hill at 7pm on Tuesday.
