Hospital’s future is ‘more secure’
Patients will be referred directly to a ward at Stamford Hospital by their doctors from April as part of a raft of exciting improvements.
Bosses at Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Trust will be transforming the popular John Van Geest ward at Stamford Hospital into a community ward from April.
The ward currently has 22 beds, which are used by patients who have left Stamford Hospital’s sister site Peterborough City Hospital.
But under the new scheme, GPs who are part of the South Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group will be able to refer patients directly to the ward, meaning they will be able to stay locally.
Ten of the beds will be reserved for patients referred by doctors and 10 more will be for patients leaving Peterborough City Hospital. The remaining two will be ringfenced for end of life care.
The ward will be managed by nurse practitioner Jayne Nimmo, who has joined the trust from Kettering Hospital.
Sue Brooks, who is the matron and site manager at Stamford Hospital, said it was an exciting change.
She said: “It is a vast improvement for people in the local area because it means in some instances, they won’t have to travel to Peterborough City Hospital.
“These changes make the future of Stamford Hospital more secure and it makes us much more responsive to the needs of our patients.
“The staff are all excited and as someone who has worked here a long time, I am hugely excited about the changes and the future of the hospital.”
Experienced nurses are also now leading the care in the minor injuries unit at the hospital as part of a six-month pilot, which started last month.
The trust suggested a string of improvements last year, which also included a major redevelopment of Stamford Hospital.
More details of the redevelopment are expected to be revealed when the trust board meets on March 26.
