CHARLOTTE Smith, a St John Ambulance cadet with the Stamford division, has been named as Lincolnshire’s Cadet of the Year for 2012.

Sixteen-year-old Charlotte, from Empingham, who is currently studying for a Level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care at Rutland County College, will now go on to compete for the top national prize and represent the county at a series of events.

An excited Charlotte said: “It’s a great honour and I am delighted to be representing all the other cadets in Lincolnshire at the regional and national level.

“I firmly believe that anyone, whatever their age, can learn first aid and would like to see more young people like me learning the skills that can save a life.

“Being part of St John Ambulance has provided me with the basic skills to use in my future career and I would recommend it to everyone.”

Charlotte will now go head to head with other cadets from across the country at the National Cadet of the Year selection week in Wiltshire this weekend.

St John Ambulance commissioner, Nikki Dudley, said: “Charlotte is a great example of a dedicated volunteer who truly believes in the difference that first aid can make to saving someone’s life.”

“She is a great advocate for St John Ambulance and is exactly the kind of person we are looking for to lead the cadets in the county.

“I am sure she will have a fantastic year and really make the most of all the opportunities it offers her.”

Anyone looking to follow Charlotte’s example and get involved with St John Ambulance, from age five upwards should call 01522 523701.
