THE High Sheriff of Rutland Bart Hellyer was on hand to open a new lift at Uppingham Town Hall on Friday.

The lift has been installed to make the upper floor of the town hall, in High Street East, accessible for wheelchair users and those who have difficulties climbing stairs.

The gents toilets have also been refurbished as part of the development at the venue.

The work has been funded thanks to a £50,000 grant from Waste Recycling Environmental, a group that awards grants to community, environmental and heritage projects across the UK.

Tea and cakes were offered to those who attended the opening.

Mayor of Uppingham David Casewell thanked Waste Recycling Environmental for its help with funding and paid tribute to Uppingham Town Council clerk Susan Awcock for her dedication to the project.
