Members of a knitting group were thrilled to welcome special visitors at their latest meeting following the completion of a big challenge.

The Oakham Knit and Natter Club welcomed the High Sheriff of Rutland Trish Ruddle and Anthony Massey, service manager for Age UK, who collected a wide range of colourful hats that were made by the group for a Sainsbury’s initiative.

The group was set a task to knit 1,000 hats for the supermarket. For each hat the supermarket sells, which are placed on top of smoothie drinks in store, Sainsbury’s will donate 25p to Age UK. Members managed to knit 1,252 hats in five weeks.

Group founder Joyce Lucas said: “This was a tremendous effort. I thought it would take a lot longer so to achieve the target in such a short space of time was incredible.”
