FIREfighters welcomed the High Sheriff of Rutland into their ranks this week.
Two hundred years ago as High Sheriff, Peter Lawson of The Green, Lyddington, would have been the first point of contact if there had been a fire in the county.
These days 999 calls bypass him, but in keeping with the old tradition, Deputy Chief Fire Officer Ian Scarrott of the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service opened the station in South Street, Oakham, to inspection by the High Sheriff and his wife Anne.
Mr Lawson said: “I was impressed by all that the service does in the community, particularly in educating young people about risks and hazards.
“Oakham Station has recently given a hard hitting seminar to a local youth club and supports my charity Warning Zone.”
