More than 50 children gathered at a school in Stamford, to compete in the annual Festival of Chess.

The event held at Stamford Junior School invited pupils from across the local area to compete against each other over six rounds of chess.

The pupils aged 7-11 years old, competed for the chance to win a number of chess trophies and the chance to represent the whole of Lincolnshire.

Children from Witham Hall School, St Gilbert’s Primary School, John Clare Primary and Malcolm Sargent Primary attended the championship, along with children from Stamford Junior School.

Helen Britton, who organised the event, said: “The children are a credit to their schools and to themselves, playing chess extremely well.

“We’re now looking forward to the next local tournament in the new year.”
