A couple who say they have laughed their way through their 60 years of marriage celebrated their diamond anniversary yesterday.

Ben and Irene Goldsmith, of Peterhouse Close, Stamford proudly received their card from the Queen to mark the occasion .

Ben, 80, who worked for British Gas for 40 years before retiring said: “We laugh every day, that is our secret.

“We have had 60 glorious years together even though we have had the most serious of illnesses in that time.

“It is a big anniversary but time has gone by so quickly it doesn’t feel like we should be celebrating our diamond wedding.”

“I was very surprised to find out how long it had been.”

The couple met in a sanitorium recovering from tuberculosis, an illness particularly Irene suffered from for many years.

However the couple married at Croyden Registry Office and moved to Stamford in 1967.

Ben said: “Irene couldn’t work for many years because of illness but she made a wonderful job of bringing up the children and running the household.

The couple have two children, Julie Ruthven, 59 and John Goldsmith, 57, who runs The Cutting Company hairdressers in Ironmonger Street, Stamford.

Ben and Irene also have four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Irene said: “It has been a laugh that is for sure.

“We have helped each other along the way and my husband has been so good looking after me.”

The couple celebrated their anniversary early with family before jetting out to Spain to enjoy a rest together in a warmer climate.
