People are being called to leave a message in memory of a loved one to raise funds for charity.

Staff at the Cancer Research UK shop in Market Place, Oakham, have set up an initiative where customers can pay £1 to write a message on a star to place on a Christmas tree in the store.

The tree will be on show at the WaterAid Christmas Tree Festival at Oakham Congregational Church, which starts on Friday, December 7 and runs until Monday, December 10.

Funds raised will go towards Cancer Research UK.

Shop manager Wendy Henderson said: “We’ve got to get the tree filled before the festival so the more messages the better.

“We just thought it was something a bit different to remember a friend or family member you have lost through cancer. Customers seem to think it’s a good idea.”
