Concerns about the fair
I am writing regarding the Stamford Fair which I attended last Tuesday with my daughter and some friends.
I entirely support the presence of the fair and appreciate it as an integral part of the town and its history, but I do have two particular concerns which I feel it is important to highlight.
The first is the continued practice by some of the stalls to offer goldfish as prizes. This is completely unacceptable and it is perfectly possible for South Kesteven District Council to ban this outdated practice – many other councils have done so.
We all know that the goldfish endure extreme levels of stress in this situation – booming vibration and noise, extreme changes in temperature of the water, and we all know that many die shortly after they are brought home. This "impulse" buying is completely the wrong way to go about acquiring a pet. It is also an unfair lure to children and the stall we went on, Hook a Duck, charged 2.50 for one go – an exorbitant amount.
The second concern is the price of many of the rides, and the general demeanour of the stall holders. We went hoping for a lovely evening out, and while we did enjoy some of the rides and one of the stall holders was pleasant and smiled at the children, in every other case they were surly and didn't even speak to or smile at the children.
I feel very sorry for those people who simply do not have the money to go on these rides – there should be some sort of price limit so that those with less available cash can still enjoy the fair and take part in something which Stamford is rightly proud of.
I have spoken to a number of friends who feel the same as I do, and the best way forward if you feel strongly about any of these issues is to write to the district council.
