Expenses are required

It is outrageous that Mr Richardson (Letters last week) is suggesting that Conservative county councillors are abusing the system and squandering taxpayers' money.

After all it is Gordon Brown and this Labour government who have bankrupted Britain, yet again, and plunged us into the worst recession since the war.

He would also do well to remember that it was this Labour government that introduced inflated pensions and pay packets for councillors, followed by massive increases each year.

Is he honestly suggesting that none of the Labour, LibDem or Independent councillors take their allowances or claim for travel?

This is patently nonsense.

Mr Richardson must be reasonably well-off if he could afford to foot the costs of being a councillor out of his own pocket.

The fact is that expenses and allowances are intended to reimburse the reasonable costs of doing the job.

While councillors must treat this taxpayers' money with great care, without it many talented people would not be able to afford to become a councillor – this role would once again become the preserve of the independently wealthy, and our democracy would be the worse for that.
