Letter: Concerned residents will scrutinise future plans for the Lady Anne's - 20/08/10

Some months ago the Mercury ran a front page article following the announcement that the House Preservation Trust had decided not to pursue its planned Appealagainst the rejection by South Kesteven District Council of controversial planning applications relating to the Lady Anne's Hotel.

At the time a Mercury journalistcontacted a number of people who had consistently objected to these plans for their response to this decision, myself included. The Mercury had been very generous in its coverage of the situation surrounding the planning applications for the Lady Anne and I therefore commented as requested.

However, aware that a fellow objector had responded in depth to your questions, I kept my comments to a minimum.

When asked for my reaction to the news, what I actually said was "That's good news. We await further developments with interest".

The quote became in print: "It is very good news for Stamford".

The addition of the words "for Stamford" implied an assumption for the townthat I would not make. I was merely stating that those who had objected to the rejected plans were pleased that they were not going to be pursued.

The omission of the second part of my comment "We await further developments with interest" omitted the crux of the issue.

This related toBurghley House Preservation Trust's likely future plans for the Lady Anne which they undoubtedly would have, once they had time to reconsider theissue.

Those who objected to the rejected plans did so because they were not felt to be sympathetic to the existing building and/or in keeping with the surrounding area. It stands that while we would not wish to see the Lady Anne stand "Empty and forlorn" for long, as stated in last week's Mercury Viewpoint, any future plans submitted would again be subject to such scrutiny.

Early indications from

subsequent conversations with Burghley would seem to be encouraging.
