Letter: Emda should not have been scrapped

EMDA, the East Midlands Develop-ment Agency, gave us The Space Centre, BioCity, Silverstone, The River Witham restoration project, and a host of other economic and environmental programmes.

They had trade stalls at the Toulouse Space Show and Shanghai in recent months, promoting East Midlands industry and exports.

Business-led with input from local government, the regional development agencies had a vision for economic growth and development.

The Government's decision to parcel up their funding, which mostly comes from the EU, into little grants to local councils will mean lots of new bus shelters, and no cohesive plan for economic growth.

No wonder both the IMF and the OECD have now both expressed international concern at the Government's economic policies.
