Letter: Invaluable service - 12/03/10

I AM writing in response to the recent article "Council cuts funds for charity worker".

Firstly, I'd like to say that the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus is determined to ensure that service levels provided to families and children in this area will not be affected by the short sighted decision of the county council to cut our annual 17,000 grant.

In the article, I note, Coun Graham Marsh commented that the association "does not meet (the) criteria and, although we have supported them in the past, the situation does change and we have to ensure we get the best value for money for the people of Lincolnshire".

Since the article, we've received letters and messages of support from families in Lincolnshire, who tell us they are surprised to read the comments and suggestion that the association did not meet "value for money" criteria - as they themselves have received invaluable support from our adviser?

Indeed, in previous feedback from the council itself, the association service rated as good in its annual review on February 9, 2009, and, of course, with no indication that future funding would not be forthcoming!

Readers will have seen from the local family who were interviewed, that the service from the association has been hugely appreciated, which is part of the responsibility our adviser has, as part of the help she offers the other 155 families living with spina bifida or hydrocephalus in Lincolnshire.

Once again, we would point out that the true cost of not supporting the association's work will be much greater in the long term as Lincolnshire County Council will have to pick up the pieces when families and individuals have to call on social care and health services in the county if the early intervention and preventative work provided by our unique service is not available.
