Letter: School move bid is cause for alarm - 26/06/09

Writing as a parent of children at Oakham Primary School, I can see the logic behind a merger with the Parks School, where resource sharing can lead to improvements for all the children affected.

However, the news in last week's Mercury that the new school might move to an unidentified location on the outskirts of Oakham, fills many parents with alarm.

A strength of Burley Road is its sense of community spirit. Joan Gibson is an excellent head, who has fostered this spirit, but the location of the school in the midst of the community is an essential contributing factor.

Having spoken to many parents, I believe that there is a strong sense that removing the school from the heart of Oakham will have a negative effect upon the life of the school, while, at the moment, the majority of children are walked to school. Safety, traffic and environment issues contribute to a sense that this is a poor idea that has certainly not been raised with the school's main constituency, the families who use it.
