£100,000 to help develop the arts

AN ARTS group has been given £100,000 to develop the local cultural scene.

The Arts Council has provided the funding to Arts for Rutland after tireless work by the group to promote cultural activity across the county.

After bidding for funding through various application procedures, Arts for Rutland were given the good news this week with the grant-giving body impressed by the “creativity and ambition” of the application.

Chairman Peter Lawson said it was fantastic boost for the county council-backed group, as well as the people of Rutland who will benefit from it.

He said: “For too long Rutland has been a Cinderella of Arts Council funding.

“Now, with powerful help from our many volunteers and Rutland County Council, we have been able to secure substantial support for the first time.”

Mr Lawson said people across the county would be able to enjoy a range of cultural activities during the next 12 months.

Plans for the money include include a ballet programme at Catmose College, a sculpture trail involving 22 fibreglass animal statues throughout the county, support for arts groups in the county and more support for the county council’s Live@ programme of events with specific Arts4Rutland supported events.

An initiative already booked by Arts for Rutland is a Rutland Theatre Club trip to Leicester’s Curve theatre to see All My Sons by Arthur Miller next month.

County councillor Peter Jones (Con), who is involved with the arts group, expressed his excitement.

He said: “It has brought an amount of money into our county that can make a real difference.

“We’ll ensure that we use local resources to promote and publicise all arts events taking place in Rutland.”

Coun Jones added there were plans to maximise the use recently-enhanced facilities at Oakham’s castle and museum for future events.
