2,000 child porn images found on man's computer

A PERVERT who went on chatlogs pretending to be a young girl being abused by her father was arrested after he was found downloading child porn from the internet.

Matthew Welby's home in Bourne was searched after an undercover police officer became concerned about messages he was posting.

Phil Howes, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court computer equipment was seized from his home and a second hard drive was taken from Welby's parents' home in Bourne.

More than 2,000 child porn images were found on the computers including a number of video clips. In addition more than 150 extreme porn images were recovered.

Mr Howes said: "One of the disturbing aspects of this is that he was in a chatlog chatting to an undercover police officer. He pretended to be a female called Jane. The conversations involved incest.

"He said in interview he was ashamed of himself. He said he had two different lives, his online life and the real world."

Welby, 27, of Wingate Way, Bourne, admitted nine charges of making indecent images of children and further charges of possession of indecent images in November 2006.

He was given a three-year community order and has to complete a sex offender rehabilitation programme. Welby was ordered to pay 1,200 costs and was placed on the sex offenders' register for five years.

Judge Michael Heath told him: "It is plain from what I have read about you that there is a problem. This was absolute and utter vile filth."

The judge said that sentencing guidelines meant he could only jail Welby for a matter of weeks and the safety of the public would be better served if his problem was dealt with over a three-year period.

Chetna Patel, defending, said Welby had lost his job and lost contact with his daughter as a result of his conviction, adding: "He is a naive 27-year-old.

"He says himself that he was disgusted by the images but he was unable to control his interest. It was an addiction which got worse and worse."
