A1 chemical spill: Road has reopened

The A1 has reopened after a chemical spill on the road yesterday.

Both carriageways were opened at 7.35am this morning.

Updated 5.30pm: POLICE are hoping to reopen the A1 in a few hours after a chemical spillage this afternoon.

Police say the spilled chemical, which was on the back of a lorry which shed its load, was a powder. They have advised residents and drivers to keep their windows shut.

Althought it is not clear when the road will reopen, officers say it should be sometime this evening.

The A1 is closed between Haddon and Wansford.

Updated 3.45pm: A SPILLAGE OF toxic waste has forced police to close parts of the A1.

A lorry shed its load of toxic waste over a central reservation between Haddon and Sibson at around 1.50pm today.

Police are advising residents and motorists in the area, as a precautionary measure, to keep their windows and doors shut as the waste is harmful if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed.

No-one has been injured in the crash but the A1 has been closed completely between Haddon and Wansford while the emergency services deal with the waste.

Firefighters and officers from the Highways Agency and Environment Agency are also on the scene.
