TROOPS in Afghanistan have sent a heartfelt thank you to Mercury readers after receiving parcels full of donated gifts.

An appeal was launched in October by Laura English, 28, of Banks Crescent, Stamford, for small gifts to send out to personnel on tour in the war-torn country.

She was overwhelmed with donations from readers and with help from friends last month packed 50 shoeboxes to send out on behalf of the Stamford branch of the Royal British Legion.

This week some of the parcels were handed out at Kandahar Airfield. About 20 RAF mechanics, electricians and metal workers are based at the airfield, including some from RAF Wittering, and many have been there since before Christmas.

Chief Tech Mark Burrell, of the Mechanical Engineering Flight, 904 Expeditionary Air Wing, said: “It means a great deal to those on deployed operations to receive parcels such as those sent by the Stamford Royal British Legion. I have deployed many times myself and know the morale value of such gifts, especially for those who have missed Christmas or any other event at home with their families.

“It is nice to know we are not forgotten and the generosity of those who have donated these gifts is very much appreciated. A heartfelt thank you to the Royal British Legion and the people of Stamford.”

Laura’s fiance Richard Johnson is an RAF mechanic and will deploy to Afghanistan tomorrow. Laura is still collecting gifts to send out later in the year. If you would like to help or to know what kind of items to donate, e-mail her at lau_900@hotmail.com
