All creatures great and small at excellent pet show

PEOPLE attended in their thousands to enjoy the pet and dog show in Stamford on Sunday.

The event, which took place on the Meadows, featured stalls and competitions, including an unusual pet section, where a hermit crab took first prize.

And prizes were given to the best dogs in both a pedigree and fun category.

The money raised will go towards the refurbishment of the Trinity Methodist Church, Barnhill, and a building project in Sierra Leone, which is being supported by the church.

George Hetherington, who is one of the organisers, said: "It was the best show yet. It's the third time we've done it and it was a real success.

"There were people there from all ages, from babies in arms to the elderly. I saw a woman there who was 92. So it was a real family event."

As well as the awards for the best dogs, Mayor Jon Poznanski presented a prize to the dog he would most like to take home.

And next year he is hoping to set up a special mayor's cup.

Alongside the different pet sections was an art compet-ition for children on their favourite animal.

The winners were decided by Stamford squash player Tanya Bailey.
