All set for return of Mid-Lent Fair

A BELL ringing will signal the arrival of the Mid-Lent Fair in Stamford.

The Showmen's Guild has presented South Kesteven charter fairs with a bell, which will be rung after the mayor Christine Brough has officially declared the fair open on Monday, March 15.

Ahead of the bell being sounded, a parade, including the mayor, Showmen's Guild and school children will leave the town hall and continue along the High Street up to Broad Street where the proclamation will be read, the national anthem played and the fair declared formally open at 7pm.

The opening has been moved from its usual opening spot in Bath Row.

Nick Vass from South Kesteven District Council's assets and facilities team said: "We decided to move it into Broad Street to recognise that part of the fair which quite often gets a little bit ignored.

"The Showmen's Guild has presented us with a bell as the Grantham and Stamford fairs were apparently the only ones not opened officially by a bell so this year we will be opening the fair with a little more pomp."

He said he expected the fair to again be a huge success.

Rides will be running from 4pm to 11pm until Saturday, March 20, when they will be running all day.

Rides vary from the thrilling Extreme and Wild Mouse to the more traditional attractions, like the carousel.

On Wednesday, March 17, members of the Showmen's Guild will be running a pramathon to raise money for Jay Cubbins, a three-year-old boy from Lancashire who has cerebral palsy.

The money will enable him to have an operation in America, which could mean he gets some movement back in his legs.

Gooches Court car park will be closed from 5pm tomorrow while Bath Row and Castle Dyke will shut at 7pm. Castle Street, Red Lion Square, Sheep Market and Crown Street will close at 8am on Sunday and Red Lion Street, Broad Street, Newgates and Star Lane will close at midday on Sunday.

All roads will reopen in the early hours of Sunday, March 21.
