Ancient monument in Stamford up for sale

The remains of a castle in Stamford have been put up for sale and are due to be auctioned later this month.
The Grade II listed structure, on the corner of Castle Dyke and Bath Row, are being advertised by Leicester auctioneers Kal Sangra.
The auctioneers describe the site as being a “Grade II listed corner building of approximately 14th century date. The building is most probably the remains of the Great Hall and comprises outhouses with three splayed arches with the centre having an ancient iron studded door.”
The structure has a guide price of £20,000 to £25,000 plus VAT. It is being sold on February 20 at Leicester Racecourse from 5pm.
The owner of the site has not been revealed by the auctioneers say it is a freehold property.
According to Stamford Civic Society a castle was built in Stamford by the Normans but by 1600 all that remained was a small hall used as an occasional law court. This had been built incorporating part of the original wall of the gabled east end of the castle’s 13th century great hall.
